How these comparisons work
Every page compares the same nine things, in the same order: look and feel, insights, customisation, journaling, other features, context and integrations, privacy, platforms and pricing. Each category gets a short verdict and a winner, and we show all this combine all this information into one table so you can decide at a glance which app is right for you.
Needless to say, a tiny disclaimer is in order. We make Luci, so read these with that in mind. But the way we keep ourselves honest is simple: the other app wins the categories it is better at, and we say so plainly. We like competition, it makes the mood tracker category better for every user. A comparison where the home team takes nine out of nine wins is not really a comparison worth having, that's an advert, and you won't find one here.
Each page states the version of both apps it was written against and the date it was last checked. Apps change. If a page looks out of date, it probably is. If so, please report it rather than trust it blindly. We aim to update these comparisons often.
Who decides the winner
Each comparison was done by one person, using both apps for real, on the versions named on the page. Where a category is close it is called a tie. Where the other app is clearly better it wins, and the text will always explain why, so you will know if the points are mute or important for your particular use case.
Prices are given as rough figures and we used US App Store prices. Note prices do differ from one country to the next, and can change at any time, so treat them as a guide to the shape of each app's pricing rather than a quote. Star ratings are our judgement, made on the same scale for every app in the series.
The nine categories
What each one looks at, so the verdicts mean the same thing on every page.
Look and feel
How the app looks, how it feels to use, and how fast an entry is on a day when you have no patience for it.
Insights
What you can learn from your own entries once you have a few weeks of them: charts, correlations, trends, and how clearly they are explained.
Customisation
What you can change: the mood scale, the things you track, the icons, the colours, the layout.
Journaling
How good it is as a journal, for people who write more than a line. Formatting, prompts, photos, voice, and reading it back.
Other features
Everything outside the core loop: goals and habits, reminders, widgets, articles, achievements, watch apps.
Context and integrations
How much of the world around an entry the app can capture, by hand or from your phone: sleep, steps, weather, places, people, health data.
Privacy
Where your entries live, who can read them, whether an account is required, and how easily you can leave with your data.
Platforms
Where the app runs: iPhone, Android, iPad, watch, desktop, and whether your entries follow you between them.
Pricing
What is free, what is paid, and roughly what the paid tier costs. Prices vary by country, so these are the options and a rough figure, not a quote.
Common questions
Why would Luci publish a comparison where it loses categories?
Because the alternative is a page nobody trusts. We genuinely want the same thing as many of our competitors, which is to help people find happiness. We know that different people want different things from a mood tracker, and an app that is better for you is better for you regardless of who wrote the page. If Luci is not the right fit, we would rather you found that out here than after a month of entries.
How often are the comparisons updated?
Whenever app get a big update we aim to reflect the changes here. Each page shows the date it was last checked and the version numbers it was checked against, so you can see at a glance how current it is.
Can I suggest an app to compare?
Yes. Email [email protected] with the app's name. Popular mood trackers and journals are the priority, since those are the ones people are already choosing between.
Is Luci free?
Yes. Mood logging, journaling, statistics and pattern discovery are free, with no account. Luci Pro adds sync across devices, the full set of guided prompt topics and the advanced statistics, as a subscription or a one-off lifetime purchase.
